The Krüger Rand is the worldwide best-known and oldest goldbullion coin. The 22 karat gold
coin is characterised by its reddish hue. That is due to added copper in order to make the coin
more suitable for circulation. Other current 1-ounce bullion coins like the American Eagle and the
Britannia are of the same purity as Krüger Rand‘s of 916/1000 (22 karat). Although the coins
contain 1 oz of pure gold their actual weight is 33,9305 grams. The Krüger Rand received its name
from Paul Krüger (1825-1904) who was voted president of the Boer-country Transvaal in 1882. He
is shown on the face of the coin, while the back displays a springbok-antelope.
