The Australian Nugget/The Australian Kangaroo is Australia’s rather late response to the South- African Krueger Rand. Minted in the Perth Mint since 1986 the coin shows famous Australian gold nuggets in the years from 1986 to 1989. The back holds a portrait of Elizabeth II. From 1990 a kangaroo replaces the nuggets but the name „Australian Nugget“ remains in the coin’s addendum. Only in 2008 the nugget is dropped in favour of „The Australian Kangaroo“ which now fifi ts the picture displayed on the coin. The design of the kangaroo changes every year. Variatio delectat!
